Foreign Policy
Foreign policy
is an important overview of major trends regarding the foreign policy of the
United States from the American Revolution to now. The Vietnam War took place
mainly in Vietnam. A small country in Southeast Asia. November 1, 1955 is when the Vietnam
War started, and April 30, 1975 is when the Vietnam War ended. And the Panama
Canal took place in Panama. It is a 48 mile canal that connects the Atlantic
Ocean and the Pacific Ocean. The build of the Panama canal started in 1913 and
was opened 1914.
A foreign policy is, according to
Businessdictionary.com, a government's plan of action in dealing with other
nations. During the Vietnam War foreign policy was used to make changes. A lot
was going on so there was time for a change. According to Country Quest, the
United States ended the military draft and switched to an all-volunteer army. Congress
passed the War Powers Resolution over Nixon's veto in November 1973. The
resolution limited the president's ability to send troops into combat without
congressional consent. Beyond policy changes, the war in Vietnam changed the
attitudes of a generation. First, the war increased caution about involvement
in foreign affairs. After Vietnam, Americans more carefully weighed the risks
of intruding in another nation's problems. And dealing with defeat in the war
broke the confidence in the moral and military. According to History.com, the intense
Cold War was between two global superpowers: the United States and the Soviet
Union. More than 3 million people (including 58,000 Americans) were killed in
the Vietnam War; more than half were Vietnamese civilians. According to a
survey by the Veterans Administration, some 500,000 of the 3 million troops who
served in Vietnam suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder, and rates of
divorce, suicide, and alcoholism and drug addiction were markedly higher among
veterans.
Theodore Roosevelt was the 26th
president of United States. He was elected in 1901 and his presidency was over
in 1909. He started building the Panama Canal in 1903. According to the Miller
Center of Public Affairs, upon entering office in 1901 after the assassination
of President William McKinley, Theodore Roosevelt, seated front left, and his
Cabinet sought to make the United States a global power. Roosevelt's diplomatic
maxim, “speak softly and carry a big stick,” was a reflection of his foreign
policy. According to the Library of Congress this is what he means by “Speak
softly and carry a big stick.” It’s saying that you can be calm and relaxed but
you are capable of hurting someone if it is necessary.
Foreign
Policy is a government's strategy in dealing with other nations. This affected
the world because we went to war with Vietnam and that affected the world
because it was a very serious war. It was 20 year war witch stared in 1955 and
ended 1975. The Panama Canal affected the world by connecting the Atlantic and
the Pacific witch caused good trade routes and for goods etc.
